Example of Lesson Plan : Speaking

  


Lesson Plan

Subject                                    : English
Skill                             : Speaking
Topic                           : Describing people’s  physical appearance
Time allotment            : 1 x 40 minutes

1.      Goal
            Students can describe about person or their physical appearance orally.

2.      Objective

Terminal objective :
1.      Students will describe their physical appearance, such as their age, height, weight ,hair and eyes individually.
2.      Students will describe about other people’s physical appearance based on certain topic.

Enabling objective :
1.      Students will identify some part of their body than can be described.
2.      Students will comprehend short conversation about describing people’s physical appearance.
3.      Students will comprehend some kinds of  hair and eyes to be described.
4.      Students will comprehend and produce necessary vocabulary for this topic.
5.      Each student will get turn to describe his/her physical appearance orally.
6.      Students will describe about people’s physical appearance with topic that they have chosen.

3.        Material and equipment
·      Picture of famous people
·      Video about describing people
·      Talking stick
·      LCD
·      Handbook

4.        Procedures

1.      PRESPEAKING

(Show the video and  picture of famous people “ Ariana Grande” ) principle Strategic investment because students have different preference with their learning style.
To elicit students’ background knowledge, we will start off with play the video on the LCD projector. It is very short and very easy. Its purpose  to guide students about the lesson today and set up framework for the lesson.

2.      SPEAKING ABOUT DESCRIBING PEOPLE

In order to make easy, teacher give new topic that related with students’ existing knowledge and background. (Meaningful learning)

Teacher      : Students, do you understand how to describing people?
Students     : Yes, Ma’am.
Teacher      : Ok, now I will describe about famous people. Look at this picture !
Students    : Yes, Ma’am.
Teacher      : Have you ever seen this people?
Students    : Yes, we often see her on television.
             Teacher      : Good, now I will describe her. She is Lady Gaga. She  is a famous American singer.                           She is 25 years old. She is pretty. She has straight black hair, brown eyes, and long                               nose. Her weight is 49 kilograms and her height is 155 cm.
Students     :  ( paying attention)

3.      WHOLE-CLASS DISCUSSION

Teacher      : Now, let’s discuss about a student in this class.  Tommy, please come forward.                      Students, please describe about Tommy’s physical appearance.
           S 1             : He is handsome but fairly thin , Ma’am. I think his height is about 165 cm and his                            weight             around 53 kilograms. He has short straight blonde hair with a side part and                              his eyes are brown.
Teacher      : Students, do you agree with she has said?
Students    : Yes/No, Ma’am.
S 2             : I think Tommy’s weight about 55 kilograms and his height is around 168 cm. He has             short straight brown hair and dark brown eyes.  
Teacher      : Now, do you agree with he has said? Do you think who is true, S1 or S2 ?
Students    : I agree with S1 Ma’am/ I agree with S2, Ma’am.
Teacher      :  Okay, now let’s we ask Tommy about his weight and height.
                   How much your weight and height, Tommy?
Tommy      : My weight about 54 kilograms and my height around 167 cm, Ma’am.
Teacher      : Students, now you have known about the way to describing people, right?
Students    : Yes, Ma’am.
Teacher      : Very good, you are smart students.

( A general discussion about describing Tommy’s physical appearance. Teacher choose Tommy as sample because students already know about him, so they can easier to associated their knowledge about Tommy.(Meaningful learning). Then, teacher ask students to discuss about Tommy in order to they can have self confidence to speak in front of their friends ( Language Ego)

4.      SCHEMATA BULDING DISCUSSION

Teacher      : Who is the singer that sing “Firework” ?
S1              : ( raises hand )
Teacher      : Who is she?
S1              :  She is Katy Perry
Teacher      : Who will describe about her?
         S 2             :  She has good voice. She has also beautiful face and long hair
S 3             : She is tall and she is early thirties, Ma’am. I know it because she is my idol.
                  S 1             : I think her dark black eyes make her more beautiful

            (During all interactions the teacher listen and prepare comment or feedback , to make sure that     students realize that they do already know a lot) - principle the Native language effect and           principle Interlanguage

5.      SPEAKING ACTIVITY

Teacher      : Okay, this is the instruction. I will play the music and use talking stick to choose               students. Then, passed it around the students.  When the music stop, students who                   holding the stick have to describe about his/her physical appearance.
                  Do you get it students?
Students    : Yes, Ma’am.
Teacher      : ( playing the music and passed the stick around students. When music stop students              who holding the stick have to describe her/his self. After student describe her/his self,             teacher will give the reward )
This activity based on principle Automaticity because students focused on meaning and message, not on grammar and other linguistic forms)
           Teacher give reward or praise immediately after students do the exercise ( principle the         Anticipation of reward)

6.      POST SPEAKING ACTIVITY


(Asking students to describe a certain topic individually ( principle Language ego because through give turn to students can increase their self confidence) . Students can take example from internet, book, etc as the sources. (principle Autonomy)
             
Teacher             : OK, everyone please choose one of this topics , then describe about the physical                             appearance based on the topic. Every  students will get turn to describe it in front of                       the class. You can browsing or searching the information about these person in                                internet.  These are the topics :
-                  Justin Bieber
-                  Michael Jackson
-                  Barrack Obama
-                  Miss Universe
Teacher             :  Do you get it students?
Students           :  Yes, I get it Ma’am.

7.      EXTRA-CLASSWORK ASSIGNMENT

Teacher            : Work in group, (principle Willingness to communicate) consist of four members.                               Then, please make role play ( principle Automaticity) about describing a famous                      people and practice it next week.
